Debra's Story
Debra Gelfand, a Glenview mother of six sons, involved herself in the community through active participation in her boys' schools. She supported the community in whatever way she could, serving the Glenview community generously and notably until her untimely death on July 4, 1990 at the age of 37.
Debra's good friend, Barbara Silver, sought to memorialize Debra's legacy by establishing a fund that could continue to serve the Glenview community long after her death. As founder and President of The Debra Gelfand Children's Foundation, Barbara has kept Debra's spirit in the forefront of the community -- coming to the aid of thousands of families experiencing crisis over more than three decades. Additionally, Debra's youngest son, Zach Gelfand, now serves alongside Barbara as the Vice President of The Foundation.
Today, the Debra Gelfand Children's Foundation's mission is to support Glenview School District 34 students and families experiencing hardships by providing resources and assistance, leading toward independence, emotional well-being, and long-term stability.
